Prices to rent or own a home in Rhode Island have skyrocketed in recent years. Tackling the housing crisis is at the top of the list for state lawmakers – but if recent decades are any indication, it will be an uphill battle. This week, we hear from Political Reporter Ian Donnis about some efforts around Rhode Island to address the issue. And last year Mack Blackie, a homeless Liberian immigrant, was arrested and jailed for another man’s crime. Now, the city of Woonsocket has apologized to him and disciplined the detective behind his arrest. We talk about it with Health Reporter Lynn Arditi. Plus, local high schooler Natasha Connolly joins us to talk about writing and read her nationally award-winning poem.

We have a special announcement: If you’re a regular listener, you may already be familiar with The Weekly Catch – we’ve been testing it out for the last several months, working to develop a model for a regular weekly broadcast and podcast that highlights the work of our reporters. We hope you like what we’ve been doing, because today’s episode marks the official launch of The Weekly Catch as a formal part of The Public’s Radio schedule.

Every Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. – or in your podcast feed – you’ll hear interviews, stories and essays that both capture the best of the week and advance stories that continue to evolve. We’ll expand on and provide context for investigative and enterprise reporting, we’ll showcase our weekly arts segment, Artscape, and we’ll share a few of our arts and culture picks for the week.

As we move forward with the show, we want to hear from you, too. We’ll be reaching out to you for your thoughts on the issues that matter most to Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.
