The debate about when to reopen the economy is growing louder by the day. It’s a hot topic in Rhode Island, where jobless claims have soared since early March. The extreme rhetoric that has become a growing part of U.S. politics marks the debate about trade-offs between the economy and public health.
RI Gov. says masks at work ‘new normal’ for months to come
At her daily news conference on Tuesday, Gov. Gina Raimondo announced a new executive order requiring Rhode Island workers across numerous sectors to wear masks in the workplace.
Electric Boat workers concerned about safety
While most of the country is experiencing an economic shutdown, businesses deemed “essential” continue to operate, and concerns are growing about safety measures in those workplaces. Electric Boat, a major employer in Rhode Island and Connecticut, is one of those businesses. Nearly two dozen workers have tested positive for COVID-19 and some say the shipbuilder hasn’t done enough to create a safe working environment.
