A momentous week as Syria celebrates lifting U.S. sanctions and a year without Assad

As they mark the first anniversary of toppling Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Syrians also celebrate another coming milestone: the lifting of sanctions, which could help give the country a new start.

Hani al-Farra shared images of his son and daughter, who went missing with his pregnant wife and one other child at a Syrian regime checkpoint in 2013. Al-Farra searched for them for years and after he couldn’t locate them, began to hope they had died rather than experience the depravities of Assad’s locks ups.
