House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello says he plans to make car taxes a priority in the next legislative session. Mattiello held a press conference Tuesday in Cranston to discuss his legislative goals. The Democrat faces a Republican challenger, Steven Frias, this November.

Mattiello said the car tax has long been a thorn in the side of his Cranston constituents, and said this session the General Assembly will be able to take up the issue.

“Now that I believe we have the ability to do it in a sustained way, we’re going to enact a plan to reduce with the goal of ultimately eliminating the car tax in Rhode Island,” said Mattiello.

In addition to cutting the car tax, he said he would seek to reduce income taxes for retirees and increase the exemption on Rhode Island’s estate tax from $1.5 million to $2 million.

“We have to continuously look at that exemption and raise it to the point that we ultimately eliminate the estate tax, or at least become competitive with our neighbors in the federal exemption,” said Mattiello.

Mattiello spoke at Taco Inc., a manufacturing company in his home city of Cranston. He announced his legislative priorities with a little more than a month to go before the November election.
