It’s no secret that our community, our region, indeed our nation, are in the midst of a daunting opioid crisis. It seems that not a day goes by without disturbing headlines about the latest overdose tragedy. The statistics are sobering, even overwhelming. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that every day more than 130 people in […]

This I Believe New England – Democracy
A relatively recent and compelling study sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Georgetown University’s Baker Center for Leadership & Governance found that only 40 percent of Americans are satisfied with our nation’s democracy. In another major study, Scottish political scientist Christopher Claassen found that support for democracy has declined in […]
This I Believe New England – Paper and Pen
When’s the last time you took an actual pen to actual paper for a time-consuming writing task, as opposed to tapping your fingers rhythmically on your computer’s keyboard? For so many of us, writing our lofty prose or mundane work tasks in longhand, whether with an inexpensive ballpoint pen, a mechanical pencil, or a luxury fountain […]
This I Believe New England – The Ring
All of us have talismen, those special objects that serve as an emotional ballast in our lives. Maybe it’s that special necklace that grandma bequeathed, the one-of-a-kind painting that used to hang in your parents’ bedroom and is now in yours, or perhaps that priceless photo of your precious children when they were toddlers. They’re on the front lines when mass shootings erupt, first responders when natural disasters strike, and among the first to arrive at the scene following suicides. Police intercede when urban gangs do battle, console victims of domestic and sexual assaults, respond to reports of home invasions […]
This I Believe New England – Saying Goodbye
February 20, 2019: Mary Murphy All of us have said painful goodbyes to the dearest of loved ones. Sometimes, the poignant farewell is at the cemetery, following a sudden death that had no forewarning. Sometimes, taking leave is slow and incremental, say during a protracted illness and steady decline that eases its way toward final breaths. For survivors, […]
This I Believe New England – Hamlet
Imagine yourself as a high school English teacher trying to inspire your students to grapple with the complex nuances embedded in Shakespearean literature. Not an easy task, you may be thinking. But as many of us have come to know and appreciate, often decades post-high school, Shakespeare is chock full of profound insights and life lessons, if […]
This I Believe New England – An Immigrant Story
The 24/7 news cycle that saturates our lives is filled with headlines about immigration. We’re surrounded by intense debates, shrill controversies, anger-filled epithets, and, yes, some thoughtful, reasoned reflections and analyses. For many of us, what we know about the complexity of contemporary immigration comes our way by websites, television commentators, newspapers, and wide-ranging radio outlets. What we […]
