A Westerly YMCA has settled a lawsuit, in which a former employee alleged she was banned from breastfeeding her daughter.
Elizabeth Gooding, a part-time employee at the Ocean Community YMCA in 2015, said she was told by other staffers she could not breastfeed in public.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island contended that the YMCA violated Gooding’s right to breastfeed in public, codified in state law.
The YMCA said it created a private area where Gooding could breastfeed. Gooding would file a suit this May.
The ACLU of Rhode Island announced a settlement was reached last Friday.
