Tony Simon is leaving his role as Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza’s chief of staff at the end of August to launch a political consulting firm. He’ll be succeeded by Nicole Pollock, who currently serves as the city’s chief of policy and innovation.
Simon’s pending exit marks the second high-profile departure from City Hall at the mid-point in Elorza’s four-year term. Brett Smiley is leaving as the city’s chief operating office to become Governor Gina Raimondo’s chief of staff.
Simon joined Elorza’s administration before the Democrat took office in January 2015. A longtime Rhode Island political operative, Simon had most recently served as deputy district director for US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. His first clients with his new firm will include Whitehouse and one of Elorza’s predecessors as mayor, US Representative David Cicilline.
“Tony is one of the most widely respected political and strategic minds in the state,” Cicilline said in a statement.
“The depth and breadth of his knowledge and ability will be a tremendous asset to my campaign and to all of his clients. I’m excited that he is a part of my senior consulting team for this election.”
A Johnston native, Simon has been involved in local politics since becoming an adult.
“It’s been an honor to help Mayor Elorza build his administration. The mayor’s energy and commitment to building strong and vibrant neighborhoods is contagious and I am thankful to him for the opportunity to serve with such a talented and dedicated team of individuals each day,” Simon said in a statement. “I am excited to build my new business and look forward to continuing to be an advocate for the city.”
Elorza’s office said Pollock “has led initiatives to improve and streamline city services, increase data transparency, and measure the effectiveness of the City’s processes and programs.” A Brown University graduate, Pollock previously worked for the state Department of Environmental Management.
“I love Providence and look forward to advancing the Mayor’s vision for strong, vibrant neighborhoods, and thriving communities throughout the city,” Pollock said. “We have a strong team and am eager to build on our collective strengths to deliver on the progress and support that our residents deserve.”
In related news, Elorza’s office announced that Carolyn Arias will serve as director of telecommunications; Matthew Shumate will serve as director of mayoral advance; and Angel Subervi will serve as Senior Advisor for Neighborhood Projects.
