Today the Scripps Howard Foundation announced the winners of its 67th Scripps Howard Awards in 15 categories, honoring the best in American journalism from 2019. An independent panel of industry experts selected the final list of winners in this year’s competition from almost 900 entries.
“Lynn Arditi is an accomplished investigative journalist and this award is well-deserved recognition of her work as well as the contributions of her colleagues at ProPublica and The Public’s Radio ,” said The Public’s Radio Managing Editor Sally Eisele.
“A 911 Emergency” was a year-long collaboration with ProPublica’s Local Reporting Network, investigating questions about Rhode Island’s emergency medical system. The series was carried by news organizations across the country, including National Public Radio and The Boston Globe.
“This award is such an honor for me personally and The Public’s Radio,” Arditi said. “I’m eternally grateful to our partners at the ProPublica Local Reporting Network for supporting this project. At a time when local news organizations are struggling, this recognition reminds us of what’s possible.”
With a focus on high-impact reporting, the Scripps Howard Awards recognize journalism that spurs action, news organizations that go the extra mile to expose previously undisclosed or misunderstood information and journalists who embrace new tools, channels, technologies and approaches to provide more immersive experiences for their audiences.
The Scripps Howard Awards honor work from television stations, networks, radio and podcasts, visual media, online media outlets, independent producers, newspapers and print publications.
“The quality of this year’s entries is proof positive that extraordinary journalism prevails and that there are many among us who take their Fourth Estate responsibilities seriously and find ways to persevere,” said Liz Carter, president and CEO of the Scripps Howard Foundation. “From national investigations with impact spanning continents to community stories deeply researched and honestly told, the 2019 winners exemplify the strength of American journalism today despite multiple challenges. The Scripps Howard Foundation is pleased to honor these stories and the journalists who persevered to tell them.”
The Foundation’s corporate parent, The E.W. Scripps Company is the presenting sponsor of the Awards.
The Public’s Radio is joined by winners in news organizations large and small across the country. Award categories include Visual Journalism, Environmental Reporting, Breaking News and Community Journalism and the Topic of the Year category, the focus of which is “The Impact of Climate Change on Communities.”
The Foundation will present more than $170,000 in prize money to the winning organizations and journalists at its annual Awards show on Thursday, April 16, in Cincinnati. The event will be streamed live on YouTube, Facebook and rebroadcast April 26 on Newsy, and will air on Scripps stations throughout the summer.
