New Bedford fishing magnate Carlos Rafael, who’s known as “The Codfather,” will be the subject of a new episode of American Greed on CNBC.
The show features true stories of people who broke the law to get rich.
Rafael owned the largest fishing fleet in New Bedford, MA. He pleaded guilty in 2017 to mislabeling hundreds of thousands of pounds of fish that his boats caught as part of a scheme to get around federal catch limits.
Rafael was busted a few years ago by undercover IRS agents and is currently serving a four-year prison sentence for his crimes, including cash smuggling and tax evasion.
The episode, called “Something’s Fishy: The Codfather,” airs Monday at 10 p.m.
