Sen. Jack Reed denounced the Trump administration’s repeal of Obama era protections of transgender students and their bathroom use, yesterday.

“The Trump Administration’s rescission of these protections is short-sighted, and at odds with our shared values,” said Reed.

The senator said the Justice Department and the Department of Education are responsible for making sure students feel safe.

“Tragically, the Trump Administration has decided to abdicate its duty to protect the rights of transgender students in our schools,” added Reed.

Rhode Island’s Department of Education began accommodating transgender and gender nonconforming students last year. Under department guidance students could use bathroom and changing facilities of the gender the identified with if their schools chose to opt-in.

RIDE stated that they would keep the guidance intact.
