State Sen. Jeanine Calkin and State Rep. Susan Donovan submitted companion bills Tuesday that aim to change overtime pay rules for salaried professionals.
The current overtime exemption law stops salaried employees who make more than $200 per week from collecting overtime. In a statement, Rep. Donovan called the threshold an abuse.
“No professional is making less than $200 a week, so this is a de facto exemption on overtime for all professional employees,” said Donovan.
The bills adjust for inflation increasing the weekly threshold to $1,036.
Sen. Calkin cited changes in how people work as another reason to update the overtime rule for professionals.
“This rule was originally put in place for those executives, administrators and other professionals who managed their own time,” said the senator.
Calkin says today’s salaried worker usually doesn’t have a say in their schedule.
Lawmakers aim to provide employees with some relief.
Both bills are now in their respective labor committees.
