Rhode Island health officials estimate nearly 20,000 Rhode Islanders are addicted to opioids – whether prescription painkillers or heroin. But only a few thousand are receiving something called “medication assisted treatment.”

That’s treatment with medications like methadone and Suboxone, which have to be prescribed by a doctor. For this week’s The Pulse, Rhode Island Public Radio’s Kristin Gourlay joins news director Elisabeth Harrison to talk about a new effort to make is easier to find doctors who offer those treatments.

Kristin Gourlay speaks with Elisabeth Harrison about the proposed new Centers of Excellence for opioid addiction treatment, a project health officials hope will expand access and make getting intro treatment easier.
