Dr. James Prochaska heads the Cancer Prevention Research Center at the University of Rhode island. Decades ago, while researching how people quit smoking, Prochaska began paying attention to the stages of behavior change.
His book, Changing for Good, theorized the six stages of behavior change and how to make change last. It quickly became a classic. Now, along with his wife, Dr. Janice Prochaska, he’s written an update: Changing to Thrive.
For this week’s The Pulse, Prochaska joins Rhode Island Public Radio’s Kristin Gourlay in the studio to talk about what he’s learned since his first foray into studying behavior change, and how we can all learn to change unhealthy behaviors for the better.
