Rhode Island’s Senate Finance Committee will meet Tuesday to discuss a proposed Amtrak route that would cut through southwestern Rhode Island. State senators will hear the Federal Railroad Administration’s recommendations for the route at the Rhode Island Statehouse.
The FRA’s plans would create a high-speed rail that would shorten the Northeast Corridor’s Boston to New York City travel time. The proposal is part of larger efforts to upgrade the Boston to Washington, D.C. route.
The FRA’s plan has met opposition from Connecticut and Rhode Island residents who argue the expansion would cut through farmland, historic towns, and preserved land.
Doug Gascon will represent the FRA at the meeting. The general public is allowed to attend but there will not be time allotted for public comment.
