The capital city is one step closer to a new budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The Providence City Finance Committee approved the amended spending plan Monday.
Before the meeting, the committee held a public hearing during which only eight people spoke. The majority represented landlords in the city calling for a reduction in the tax rate for non-owner occupied rental properties. A representative for Mayor Jorge Elorza also spoke, in support of the budget.
During the committee meeting itself, the lawmakers got a final rundown of the proposed changes. The new plan is about $3 million more than the budget proposed by Elorza in April. The new budget now includes thousands more for things like traffic calming, blight removal, and $200,000 extra for the street festival PVDfest.
The amended document could go before the full council as early as next week.
