Rhode Islanders might not lose weekend commuter rail service going to Boston after all. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker dropped his support of a proposal that would cut all weekend commuter rail service for a year.

The plan hoped to tackle a portion of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s $42 million budget gap. Suspending service would save the agency roughly $10 million but has faced opposition from residents and lawmakers.

Massachusetts’ congressional delegation has said cutting weekend commuter rail service could deter people from using the service in the future.
