Judiciary committees in the Rhode Island General Assembly are slated to start hearing testimony on Tuesday on a series of gun-related proposals.

Activists are pushing for new restrictions after the school shooting last month in Parkland, Florida. Gun-rights supporters, meanwhile, are expected to oppose many of the proposed changes.

Proposals include a ban on semi-automatic weapons and an increase in the legal age for purchasing a gun from 18 to 21. It also includes a bill that would give judges the authority to temporarily take guns away from anyone they determine poses a great risk to public safety.
