International Overdose Awareness Day is being observed around the globe Wednesday. New Englanders are marking the occasion with several events.
At 6 pm, on the beach in Narragansett, Rhode Islanders are gathering for a candlelight vigil and a moment of silence. At 7 pm in Providence, organizers hold a memorial and then screen an addiction and recovery documentary at the Providence Place Mall cinema. Rhode Island Hospital employees plan to staff a table in the lobby with information about addiction and overdose. And in Worcester, overdose survivors speak on an afternoon panel at U Mass Memorial Medical.
This day of remembrance and awareness-raising has grown from a single event in Australia to an international movement. And it comes at a time when drug overdose deaths are rising across the nation.
