A subset of the New England Fishery Management Council is taking the summer to consider new methods for tracking groundfish in the region like cod, haddock, and sole.
The Groundfish Plan Development Team will present the full council with a progress report in September.
Regulators say accurate data is necessary to set catch limits and prevent overfishing. Among the alternatives to human reporting, regulators are considering the use of electronic monitoring.
Also under consideration are ways to streamline the weekly reporting process itself.
While some fish stocks remain strong in New England, some valuable catch like cod stock, have plummeted in recent years.
