A group calling itself the Pokanoket Nation has been calling for Brown to turn over land in Bristol, which was the ancestral home of Wampanoag Chief Sachem Metacom, also known as King Philip. The group rejected Brown’s offer last week to reach a compromise.
Brown officials proposed, among other things, a process that would engage the Pokanoket and other local Native people in conversations about the future of the land.
The Pokanoket Nation said Monday that the demonstration will begin at Brown Street Park in Providence Tuesday and continue to the entrance of the main street at Brown.
The tribe and their supporters set up a long-term encampment last month to reclaim their ancestral home in Bristol, saying it was illegally taken from them hundreds of years ago.
University officials have said the school has owned the legal title to the property for decades.
Brown University said a proposed agreement to end the encampment also included a thorough historical review of the property, including oral histories and archeological research.
