Anya Rader Wallack took the position as head of Medicaid, the state’s health insurance program for low income residents, in October. Before that she led the state’s health insurance exchange, HealthSource RI.

In an email sent to staff, Wallack wrote she accepted the Medicaid position during an especially difficult time, about a week after her husband passed away. She wrote the job has been “a rewarding challenge and a welcome distraction.”

On making the choice to leave Wallack wrote, “I have decided that I need to step back

and take some time to care for my son and myself.”

She has accepted a position at Brown University. Wallack is a native of Vermont. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Vermont, and PhD in social policy from Brandies University.

Prior to her work in Rhode Island’s public sector, Wallack ran a private health policy consultancy, and worked for Vermont’s health insurance exchange.
