Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee tested positive for COVID-19 Saturday evening, according to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson Matt Sheaff. McKee plans to work remotely while isolating for five days.
The governor is reportedly experiencing mild symptoms, and is “in good spirits,” said Sheaff. McKee is vaccinated, has received two booster shots, and is taking antiviral medication Paxlovid.
On Thursday, McKee attended an event promoting behavioral health care investments with local leaders and legislators, including Rhode Island House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi. The governor’s team says it is reaching out to anyone who might have been exposed within the two days prior to his diagnosis.
McKee is one of six candidates in the democratic primary race for governor. His diagnosis comes just three weeks before the Sept. 13 primary election.
