A two-day conference on “smart cities” will convene Thursday in New Bedford, drawing 20 mayors from across the U.S., including several from New England cities.
The gathering is part of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
“The meeting will be an opportunity for mayors to share ideas about new technologies and programs, set national policy goals, and recommit ourselves to a more sustainable America,” said New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell in a public statement about the event.
During the meeting, city leaders will take part in discussions on how cities can build up renewable energy infrastructure, including solar and wind farms, where New Bedford has already made significant investments.
Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza and Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia are also expected to be in attendance. Other attendees will include representatives of green energy companies, including Rhode Island’s Deepwater Wind and Germany’s Siemens, two offshore wind developers.
