House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello announced Tuesday the selection of Danica Iacoi, general counsel for the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety since 2011, as his new chief legal counsel.

Iacoi succeeds Richard Raspallo, who was confirmed last month as a Superior Court magistrate. He’s scheduled to be sworn in to that position on October 13.

Iacoi is a graduate of Providence College and the New England School of Law. She’s slated to begin work in the speaker’s office on November 6.

Before joining the Department of Public Safety, which includes the Rhode Island State Police, Iacoi worked in the office of legislative council from 2004 to 2011. She previously worked in the state Department of Administration, as a special assistant attorney general, and an assistant public defender.

As general counsel at DPS, Iacoi has represented the department in employment, labor relations and human resources.
