Do you support trucking tolls for tractor trailers on Rhode Island highways?
I don’t have an objection to trucking tolls. We have a serious need to improve Rhode Island’s infrastructure, and this was a way of getting the necessary funding and getting the work accomplished.
Would you support a state-mandated health insurance program?
I am in favor of universal single-payer health coverage. I don’t see a realistic prospect of that happening at the state level. We can’t seem to get UHIP right, let alone DCYF or the DMV. We have much to straighten out before we’re prepared to dive into a massive undertaking of this type.
Are you in favor of expanding protections against sexual harassment to include domestic workers (such as nannies) and volunteers (such as interns)?
I would have supported some of the measures proposed by the Special Legislative Commission to Study Unlawful Sexual Harassment – bills that never got to the floor, in this past session. In particular, I expect I would have voted for H-8275 on awareness education and H-8276 on extending the statute of limitations in some cases to two years.
If given the opportunity, would you codify the right to have an abortion in state law?
I would support legislation that maintains the protections of Roe if that decision is overturned by the US Supreme Court.
Is the state doing enough to help people who have been left behind by the economy? If not, what additional steps should be taken?
I would favor an increase in the state minimum wage to $15 per hour, over time, so long as we are in line with our neighboring states.
Does primary education need to be improved statewide? If so, how?
Yes, primary education can always be improved. On education, Massachusetts seems to be doing far better than Rhode Island, at present. We should institute best practices in education – implementing policies that have succeeded elsewhere.
Do you support RI’s designation as a sanctuary state? Why or why not?
Yes. I believe that many federal immigration policies, as implemented, are unjust. People who have lived in the country since childhood, and know no other place … face deportation and/or other serious consequences. I understand why cities or states may choose not to cooperate with all aspects of federal immigration policy, and I agree with that choice.
