Nathan Carman – a 22-year old man lost at sea for eight days – is in stable condition according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Carman and his mother Linda departed by boat from Point Judith in Narragansett, last Saturday.

Carman was found aboard a life raft 100 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard by a passing freighter, says Coast Guard Petty Officer Third Class Nicole Groll.

“Apparently he had food and water on his life raft, and that played a key factor in his being able to survive for so long,” said Groll.

The Coast Guard suspended its search for 54-year old Linda Carman, who’s been missing beyond the Coast Guard’s estimated survivability window.

“The survivability model takes into account, environmental factors, such as water temperature, weather, the fact that Linda Carman was unprotected from the elements, that there was no additional life raft on board, there was no food and water,” said Carman. “So based on that information, the likelihood of finding her alive is minimal.”

Carman said the boat he and his mother took from Rhode Island took on water.
