Lillian Calderon, the woman who was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement last month, was released to her husband Tuesday and returned to Rhode Island.
The RI ACLU has worked on Calderon’s behalf. In a statement Steven Brown, executive director of the ACLU of Rhode Island, celebrated Calderon’s return home.
“This is yet another local example of families torn apart and lives disrupted for no legitimate immigration enforcement purpose,” Brown commented. “We are glad that she is able to return to Rhode Island and her family.”
Calderon, a native of Guatemala, has lived in the U.S. since she was three years old. Her detention sparked an outcry by elected officials, including Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza and members of Rhode Island’s congressional delegation.
Calderon was initially held at a facility in Boston. She was taken into custody while and her husband were pursuing an effort regarding her immigration status.
Earlier this month, a federal judge barred Calderon’s deportation. That was after the Massachusetts chapter of the ACLU filed suit.
