Lifespan has announced plans to partner with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Massachusetts. Lifespan officials say the partnership will provide patients better access to care for rare and complex cancers. The two hospital systems have signed a letter of intent.

If the plan moves forward, Lifespan says it would also expand access to clinical trials for patients from both systems.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has several locations and partners in Massachusetts. Lifespan’s hospitals include Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam, and Newport, among others.

The proposed partnership comes at a time when more health care organizations are looking to join forces to become more competitive and provide better patient care.
