Once a features reporter for Providence’s NBC affiliate, anchor Matt Lauer has been fired by the network for “inappropriate sexual behavior.”
Before Lauer became a household name, he was co-host of the program PM Magazine on WJAR, Channel 10. The show featured light, human interest stories about topics like parades and bridal fashion.
The stint on WJAR came after he started his TV career in West Virginia. By 1981, Lauer came to work in Rhode Island.
Lauer became the anchor of NBC’s The Today Show in 1994. In a time of dramatic changes in media, The Today Show remains a big profit center for NBC.
According to a memo obtained by NPR, the chairman of NBC News says Lauer was fired due to “a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.”
The statement from NBC said executives had reason to believe this “may not have been an isolated incident.”
