Katherine Gregg, who was reassigned last month from her longtime beat at the Statehouse, has been named the Providence Journal’s political reporter, covering major stories and the state’s congressional delegation, RIPR has learned.
Gregg will work from the ProJo’s downtown office on Fountain Street as part of the new assignment. She declined to comment when contacted by RIPR.
The news that Gregg was being taken off the Statehouse beat, after more than 30 years of covering Smith Hill, triggered a storm of protest on social media. ProJo Executive Editor David Butler responded by saying Gregg might return to the Capitol.
For now, the ProJo continues to staff the Statehouse with three reporters: Alisha Pina, Patrick Anderson, and Jennifer Bogdan.
Butler responded in the affirmative via email last week when asked if the ProJo will replace political columnist Edward Fitzpatrick, who is working his last day Friday before taking a new job as head of media and public relations at Roger Williams University. Yet it remains unclear when the columnist role will be filled, and if the position may be reshaped into a different role.
