William McKenna, the 53-year-old man fatally injured during a stabbing Tuesday in Pawtucket, is the younger brother of state Supreme Justice Maureen McKenna Goldberg.

The relation was confirmed by court spokesman Craig Berke.

According to various media reports, Pawtucket police responded to the area of 151 Benefit Street at about 4:45 pm Tuesday, outside a convenience store. McKenna was taken to Memorial Hospital and died from stab wounds.

There were few details on what precipitated the attack or a possible suspect. Berke said he didn’t have further information on the attack.

The fatality was the first in Pawtucket this year.

Major Arthur Martins of the Pawtucket police said investigators have received a vague description of a white or Hispanic man running from the scene of the attack.

McKenna Goldberg grew up in East Providence as one of seven children. She’s married to the prominent lobbyist Robert Goldberg. Former governor Lincoln Almond appointed McKenna Goldberg to the Supreme Court.
