Jeb Bush, the former Governor of Florida and presidential hopeful was in the Ocean State Wednesday.
Bush spoke at Brown University, just a week after his mother, the former First Lady, Barbara Bush died.
The onetime Republican Presidential candidate and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush referenced his late mother, the former first lady, several times during his talk in Providence. He referred to the curt, no-nonsense advice for which she was remembered.
The Republican politician gave a thirty minute speech where he touched on hot-button issues including immigration, foreign relations, and President Donald Trump.
“I believe he won fair and square. He was elected President of the United States,” said Bush of President Trump. “I’m not a big fan of how he behaves in the office, if you will. I don’t think he’s a role model for people.”
When asked about the tone and changing rhetoric of the 2016 election, Bush said he couldn’t bring himself to use similar language as other candidates.
“So on the debate when people would say, just, I’m not kidding, outrageous, stupid stuff, that they knew for a fact was not accurate but they said to appeal to people,” said Bush. “It just wasn’t in my DNA to do it. So from that perspective I was a pretty lousy candidate.”
When asked if his views on gun control changed in the wake of recent high school shooting in Florida, he said he supported new age restrictions for certain types of guns, as well as a ban on bump stocks.
