The House version of Gov. Gina Raimondo’s proposal for the state budget is expected to emerge later this week. The main question is how lawmakers will wipe out a $134 million deficit.
A source familiar with the budget process says lawmakers are looking to cut wherever they can. That reflects the need to close the $134 million deficit and come up with an additional $26 million to start phasing out the car tax.
Gov. Raimondo unveiled a $9.2 billion budget proposal in January.
Lawmakers traditionally take the governor’s spending plan and make a series of changes ahead of the start of the next fiscal year on July first.
This time around, the top questions include whether the House budget will contain even part of Raimondo’s proposal to offer two years of college tuition to Rhode Islanders.
