At her daily briefing on Tuesday, the governor also announced three more COVID-19 deaths in Rhode Island, bringing the state’s total to 30. There are now 1,229 confirmed positive cases in the state.
The governor extended multiple restrictions on businesses and gatherings until May 8. These include the ban on public gatherings of more than five people, the closure of theaters, cinemas, bowling alleys, hair salons and other businesses, and a ban on dine-in restaurant service.
Raimondo said she is trying to maintain economic activity in Rhode Island, but restrictions on many businesses will remain in place to protect public health.
“The overall approach that I’ve taken is to be aggressive, to be targeted, and to try to strike a balance between keeping people safe and maintaining a semblance of an economy. All difficult decisions,” she said. “My top job is to keep everyone safe. Safety and health—number one.”
The governor said her order requiring two weeks of quarantine for people traveling into Rhode Island from out-of-state will also remain in effect for another month.
Earlier Tuesday, Gov. Raimondo signed a new executive order requiring hospitals to submit daily updates to state health officials on their number of COVID-19 patients and testing, as well their current levels of medical supplies.
Raimondo said hospitals have been “great” with reporting data so far, but this additional requirement will help state officials in their efforts to procure more personal protective equipment, medical equipment and other supplies.
The governor said about 1,800 tests were performed statewide Monday and she’d like to continue to further ramp up testing.
