Providence Police arrested a former public bus driver, accused of stealing bus fares. The driver has been charged with felony embezzlement.

Michael Campopiano was a bus driver for 20 years. But after reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance footage, officials with the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority found evidence suggesting Campopiano was stealing bus fares.

RIPTA sent the findings to Providence Police, who arrested Campopiano for embezzlement and unlawful misappropriation, a misdemeanor.  It remains unclear just how much money officials believe Campopiano stole, for how long, or what prompted the investigation in the first place. RIPTA operates public buses across the state, and employs about 800 people.
