Former State Sen. James “Jamie” Doyle III, a 46-year old Pawtucket Democrat, today pleaded guilty to 31 counts of bank fraud and one count of filing a false tax return and for failing to file a tax return.

Doyle, appearing before U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith, acknowledged that as owner of Doyle Respiratory, LC and Doyle Sleep Solutions, LLC, he “engaged in $74 million in worthless bank transactions in check-kiting schemes via bank accounts he controlled at several banks, including Bristol County Savings Bank, Santander Bank and  Alliance Blackstone Valley Federal Credit Union.”

Doyle  acknowledged that he accomplished the scam by writing checks from accounts he knew were not supported by sufficient funds and depositing those checks into different accounts to cover daily overdrafts.

Doyle, son of the late Pawtucket Mayor James Doyle, also admitted  in court that for tax years 2013 through 2016, he and his wife failed to report to the Internal Revenue Service more than $1 million in income and failed to pay $305,426 in taxes owed to the IRS.

In January, 2018, Doyle resigned from the senate, citing his need to enter treatment for alcoholism. His father. a popular figure in Pawtucket politics, served as both a city council member and mayor. The elder Doyle died in August 2016.

Sentencing for Doyle is scheduled for January 18, 2019.
