The humidity might finally be breaking as thunderstorms roll through Tuesday. But the storms may do more than cool things off.

“The main threat that we’re looking at is some flooding,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Lenore Correia. “There’s a lot of rain associated with these storms so it will downpour really quick. And we’re looking at some possible flooding especially in those urban areas.”

The Service has issued a flash flood watch for Rhode Island and parts of Massachusetts, including Bristol County.

“Probably Providence, really any big towns or cities that we’re looking at that have a lot of pavement,” Correia said. “And if there’s any poor drainage anywhere, those are going to be the areas to look out for.”

Other cities could include  Warwick, New Bedford, and Fall River. That’s because the thunderstorms are slow moving, Correia said.

“That’s the main problem, because it’s so slow it’s not moving out fast enough,” she said. “So when it’s raining, it’s just staying over the same spot for a very long time.”

Correia said the rains might continue into early Wednesday morning.
