In Fall River, voters are choosing candidates for the city council, the school committee, and the mayor’s office.

Incumbent Mayor Paul Coogan is seeking re-election after four years in charge at City Hall. His challenger is former mayor Sam Sutter, who lost the office in 2015 to a young Jasiel Correia. Sutter also served for seven years as the Bristol County District Attorney, the region’s top criminal prosecutor.

Key issues on the mayoral campaign trail included a recent cluster of shootings in Fall River and the rising cost of housing. The winner will serve a two-year term.

In Fall River’s city council race, 18 candidates are running for nine seats, each of which carries a two-year term. The race for Fall River’s school committee features ten candidates vying for six spots.

A few miles away in New Bedford, incumbent city councilors are facing serious challenges from newcomers and former politicians vying to get their seats back. New Bedford’s city council includes a mix of at-large seats and seats decided by voters in each of the city’s wards.

Polls will be open until 8 pm. Voters who don’t know which polling precinct to visit can check online at the Secretary of State’s website.
