Jackson was indicted in 2016 for misusing campaign funds, and embezzling more than $100,000 from the Providence Cobras, a nonprofit track and field club in Providence.

The indictment prompted a recall, and Jackson lost the Mount Hope council seat he had held since first winning election in 1994.

A sentencing memo from the Attorney General’s office likened Jackson’s crimes to those of former House Speaker Gordon Fox, who was sentenced to prison after accepting more than $50,000 in bribes. The state attorney general’s office is seeking a threeyear prison sentence for Jackson, along with a $1,000 fine.
