Two teachers in the city are staying home from school for reasons related to the current spread of the coronavirus. A teacher at the  East Providence Silver Springs elementary school is under voluntary quarantine. Her husband recently traveled to Italy, and is one of the three confirmed cases of the illness in the state.

A second teacher also traveled to Italy, on a separate trip during February. She returned to work at the East Providence Career and Technical Center, for the last week, but left school voluntarily Tuesday and won’t return to work until next week.

Neither teacher has shown symptoms of the illness.

The East Providence School committee has decided in the case that school needs to be closed, to allow students to complete schoolwork online. The committee says parents who are worried about sending children to school can receive an excused absence. But for now, schools across the district are open.
