By order of the Fall River City Council, Mayor Jasiel Correia II has until 5pm Wednesday, December 26 to resign or the city will hold a recall election. The council voted unanimously last Tuesday to set that deadline for Correia, who is facing 13 federal criminal charges.
The Board of Elections has certified over 4,500 signatures from registered voters calling for the recall of the mayor.
If Correia does not resign by the deadline, the Herald News reports, the City Council will convene a special meeting on January 2 to schedule the recall election. The Fall River Board of Election Commissioners has given the council two election dates to choose from: March 12 or March 19.
Mayor Correia has said he will not resign.
Meanwhile, Correia’s new attorney has pursued an objection with the Board of Elections, claiming the recall petition that started this process is invalid. The status of that objection is unclear.
