Cape Cod and the surrounding islands are forecast to get some of the worst wind and rain from Jose, although the storm is tracking further east than earlier predictions had indicated. In Falmouth, some residents were stocking up on water, gas and food Tuesday, ahead of the storm.
“Obviously we always prepare for outages,” said resident Virginia Burry. “So we have candles and matches at hand. We have water on hand.”
Burry stopped at a grocery store but said she was not there to prepare for the storm. Instead, she was picking up some tapioca pudding for her mother.
“Not worried,” Burry said of Jose.
Another resident, Tammy Dowler, was at The County Fare Restaurant in Falmouth, where she works and which plans to remain open Wednesday. Dowler wasn’t too worried about Jose either, and as expected, forecasters downgraded it to a tropical storm late Tuesday.
“If it was a hurricane, there’d be more preparation,” said Dowler, who only stocked up on water in case there was a loss of power.
“You know we have the food that we have at the house, so make sure just water and full up on gas,” Dowler said. “There’s nothing else you can really do.”
Dowler remembers Hurricane Bob, which hit New England in 1991 as a Category 2 storm. She said it was nothing compared to what Florida experienced with Hurricane Irma.
