Closing arguments begin Monday, in the trial of Dan Doyle at Washington County Superior Court. Doyle faces charges of pocketing funds intended for the Institute for International Sport, which he founded and directed. The organization ran the World Scholar-Athlete Games, a camp for young people.
In 2012, state auditors found the Institute, housed at the University of Rhode Island, could not account for hundreds of thousands of dollars received in state and grant funding. After further investigation, Doyle was charged with 18 counts, including embezzlement and forgery.
Doyle, who lives in West Hartford, Connecticut, has maintained his innocence throughout the investigation and the trial. Court proceedings began in September, and were briefly put on hiatus when Doyle was hospitalized for an unspecified illness, which his family said was caused by the stress of the trial.
