The developer of a natural gas power plant proposed for Burrillville may have encountered a roadblock to securing a permit for construction.
ISO-New England, the region’s electrical grid operator, wants to terminate an agreement made with developer Invenergy.
The contract, called a capacity supply obligation, would have provided monthly payments to Invenergy as long as the power plant was up-and-running by next year. However, since there has been little progress made in the permitting process, ISO is asking federal energy regulators to end the deal.
Conservation Law Foundation, an environmental advocacy group, said in a statement this is proof the energy from the power plant isn’t needed. The group also plans to ask Rhode Island’s Energy Facility Siting Board to dismiss the power plant proposal if Invenergy doesn’t withdraw it.
Invenergy said in a statement the company remains committed to the project and will move forward even if the agreement is terminated.
The project is undergoing a series of final hearings before the Energy Facility Siting Board. A decision is expected later this year.
