The study was created to help patients find effective methods to reduce obesity. Researchers at the Brown School of Public Health studied 2,400 people diagnosed with obesity, who all underwent some sort of weight loss surgery – like gastric bypass.
The study found the people who suffered from eating disorders such as binge-eating were the most likely to keep the weight off in the years after surgery. Researchers also found that weight-loss surgeries are not as effective for people with high blood sugar levels, or those who had gained weight as children.
The study is published in the research journal Obesity.
