A Brown alum has donated $100 million to advance brain science and help find cures for ALS and Alzheimer’s diseases.
The gift is from Robert J. Carney and his wife, Nancy D. Carney. He is a 1961 Brown graduate and a long-serving university trustee. The gift will change the name of the Brown Institute for Brain Science to the Robert J. and Nancy D. Carney Institute for Brain Science.
“This is a signal moment when scientist around the world are poised to solve some of the most important puzzles of the human brain,” said Brown President Christina Paxson. “ This extraordinarily generous gift will give Brown the resources to be at the forefront of this drive for new knowledge and therapies. “
The donation will allow Brown to accelerate hiring of leading research faculty and post-doctoral fellows in fields related to brain science.
Robert Carney, of Houston, is a businessman who founded Jet Capital Corp., and Texas Air Corp., which owned Continental Airlines.
The Carney donation is one of three single gifts of $100 million to Brown in the university’s 254-year history.
