Political newcomer Jason Knight defeated veteran State Rep. Jan Malik in the District 67 Democratic primary by winning a huge victory in the two Barrington precincts, even as Knight lost the two polling places in Malik’s Warren stronghold.

Malik scored 519 votes at the two Warren polls, where Knight, a lawyer, harvested just 245 votes. But Knight clobbered Malik, 620 to 153 at the two polling stations in Barrington. Malik, who owns Malik’s Liquor Store in Warren, was first elected to the House in 1996. He was a target of the Progressive Democrats, who won other upsets Tuesday, including the apparent defeat of House Majority Leader John DeSImone. That contest is headed for a recount.
