Andrew Augustus is joining Cranston Mayor Allan Fung’s GOP gubernatorial campaign as press secretary.

Augustus previously worked as a reporter for WPRO AM and as a press associate for Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza.

Augustus recently returned to Rhode Island after briefly residing in Nevada.

Fung’s campaign has been noteworthy so far for mostly declining comment on policy questions from news organizations, including Rhode Island Public Radio. Despite repeated requests, Fung has not appeared as a guest on RIPR’s weekly Political Roundtable segment since February 2017.

Fung finished about four points behind Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo in the 2014 race for governor. He announced his second campaign for the state’s top job in October.

House Minority Leader Patricia Morgan and businessman Giovanni Feroce are also running for governor as Republicans. Voters will pick the GOP candidate during a September primary.
