Rhode Island radio station WBRU will go off the radio airwaves Thursday night. The alt-rock station is being sold to a California-based non-profit, which is expected to broadcast contemporary Christian rock on the 95.5 FM signal.
WBRU filed an application to transfer the station’s license to the non-profit Educational Media Foundation this week. EMF operates the Christian rock stations known as K-LOVE across the country. WBRU’s signal sold for the top bid $5.6 million.
WBRU spokesman Art Norwalk says the station’s traditional alternative rock will continue to stream online.
“I’d like to underline something here,” Norwalk said. “WBRU is not being sold. An FM radio license is being sold and WBRU continues on the internet.”
The station is owned by Brown Broadcasting Service, which is an entity separate from the University. Norwalk says the station has faced financial challenges in recent years.
