The PawSox stadium proposal passed last week by the Rhode Island Senate is expected to undergo some changes when the plan gets introduced at the Rhode Island House of Representatives.
State representatives say they want to reduce the potential exposure for taxpayers.
Supporters say a new $83 million PawSox stadium would spark economic growth in Pawtucket. But critics oppose the use of public financing to pay for about half the cost of the ballpark. That’s why legislation passed by the state Senate is likely to change when it moves to the House.
“I think that right now the team is waiting to see exactly what is being proposed,” said PawSox spokesman Guy Dufault. He added that the team’s willingness to stay in Rhode Island depends on the details. “We really have to see the language to be able to make that determination,”
For now the team says they remain in wait-and-see mode.
“We have not been contacted by the House about any type of negotiation, so we’re in the same wait and see game as everybody else,” Dufault said.
The PawSox remain in talks about a possible relocation to Worcester. Dufault said the team is keeping its options open, and has been contacted by a number of other communities.
